I have noticed that the news is allways negative. There is not any happines at all. With normally the same stories all the time.
This is why i ask does the news make the world seem worse than it actually is?
With credit crunch this and crimes commited that

It depends what it is. Obama winning the election was good news. That plane crashing in the Hudson River was good because nobody died. But thats about it. It is mostly always bad. And when it is bad they do always make it sound worse. I'm gonna go for Yes;)

It's the same reason the Eastender's Christmas Special is always the single most depressing (And worst acted) piece of drama of the entire year. People like misery because it makes them feel better about their own lives.

'Someone got killed' is much more exciting than 'nobody did'.

Is this even a discussion? lol

Since the birth of media, it has made our world look much worse. Media exaggerates, which is why it's a flawed medium of information, yet people swear by it.

Media is about money, much like everything else in this world, so they don't put happiness because it would lack ratings. The human psyche, by nature, prefers happiness for itself, and misery for others. It's a simple fact of life that returns all the way back to the roots of jealousy, competition and pride.

You can have a news flash about puppies being born, which is great and happy, and have maybe 10 viewers and a nice MSN.com article somewhere in the archive. Or you can have Obama being rammed in the head by a misguided Pelican, consequentially killing him due to deep-sea bacteria that entered his ear upon impact. What do you think will generate more money for FOX/CNN etc?

In the media, misery will always take priority over happiness. There's plenty of happiness in this world - it's just not interesting and nobody gives two shits and a half. Misery sells, and that's what the media is trying to do; sell. And if they have to exaggerate or emphasize certain aspects of said misery to gain more interest, then they won't hesitate for a second.

You do have a point.
If you think about it the news helped begin the credit crunch. This is beacuse they go "A recession is on the way" Then everyboody begins to become tight and stop spending. Witch helps bring on the credit crunch

Poeple dont realize that such small things in the world have such a big affect.

Damn, why i am so interested in becoming a journalist i have no idea, but the only way they sell is by exaggerating like mental. Especially the daily mail......

'500,000,000 buses made it safley to there destinations around the world' isnt quite as interesting or attension grabbing as one crashing. Sure the media exaggerates these issues but thats expected. If you think the UK media is bad try the US news, they had me thinking that i was gonna be blown up by a terrorist the miniute i left the hotel when i was out there :P.

Of course the news will make it sound like the end of the world, do you find "chicken lays egg" compelling TV?

Personally I do. But therein lies the problem, I'm not 'the public', I don't watch Big Brother, I don't buy Heat Magazine. I'd rather watch a documentary on World War 2 than I would watch American Pie 2.

Climate of fear etc. etc. etc.

I'm beyond cynical these days. I take the indisputable facts and douse the rest of the guff they spout with a liberal serving of salt.

Yes, although i have to say in Norway theres a lot more minor cheery news to go alongside the dreary international news on the national news stations... In Britain its ALL boring and shit.

Yes.

"We have a new story on a possible cure to cancer! But first....Gunner goes into the local bank, kills 7 including children, and leaves with all of the money."

Ooh sorry but i disagree with you guys on this.
The news media in the UK is censored. An example of this was the recent flare up in Gaza. Al jazeera aired vivid images of the destruction to arabs and jews in a reasonably unbalanced way. In the uk we only see what they allow us to. If we were to see these and other atrocities the general populus may even lift their nose up from Heat, that is not in the goverments interest.
I am so beyond cynical I make amplified look like a big brother fan.:sneaky:

I agree with the points already made, media is always going to strive on the negative because it makes for better viewing. We all love a bit of action and extraordinary occurances.

TV news or any other news is just a blanket to what is really going on in the world. The true news you find can be found on the internet. If everyone truly new what was going on I think they would be more horrified, I know this because I have seen some dodgy stuff. Plus the news is only one sided. Just look at how they portray some of the stories its very one sided. Cleverly done though but it definitely tries to influence how you think. I always look more details up online before I believe what I am told straight out. Don't get me wrong their are alot of false stuff on the net but if you want to reserch something their is alot of interesting stuff going on that is very shocking.

Yes i believe that the news mke things seem so much worse thatn they are.

For example, they make it out like every teenager on the street carries a knife in Britain! i no for a fact that me and none of my mates carry knives, they just exagerate everything.

The news can also make things worse, for example the "credit crunch." If they had never said that a recession was on the way then people would have carried out their lives as normal, but people got tight with their money and stopped spending money, which makes a recesion much worse.

for positive new i found this website : http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/
