Pioneer Unveils 400GB Monster Disc

Blu-ray could be about to go stupid-sized with the announcement of a whopper 400GB disc, created by Pioneer. While current BDs have one or two 25GB layers, Pioneer's new beast - demoed at the recent Taipei IT Month trade show - allows for up to 16 layers on a single disc, and they say it's PS3 compatible.
Increasing Blu-ray's already prodigious storage by a factor of eight opens up a wealth of new possibilities, especially when it comes to movie-playback. The full 50MB per second bandwidth of Blu-ray can be unleashed, resulting in absolutely pristine, zero-loss film transfers. Multi-disc TV series boxets could become a thing of the past too, with a single BD able to contain a full season run.

Deep Space
There are clear advantages for gaming too. Assuming Sony adopts Pioneer's new technology, developers would essentially have near-limitless storage on tap, meaning more content, better visuals and uncompressed 7.1 surround audio as standard. Realistically, however, gaming is unlikely to benefit in the short term. Thus far only MGS4 uses the 50GB disc while the majority of releases barely use 10GB. Creating all that extra game content means a huge additional investment from already cash-strapped games developers, most of whom also need to cater for the DVD-centric Xbox 360. But for the next generation With PS4, perhaps? The technology's there, and the sky's the limit.

So, what do you all think?

Should Sony take up the opportunity to invest in the 400GB disc?

Or do you think it's a waste of money, and no-one will use it to the full potential?

Discuss. ;)

sounds very interesting i do think sony should take this opportunity with both hands waste of money or not it should be got just so the possibilities are there for them when they are ready to expand
seems very interesting though ;)

Imagine a game that is set in say London. With the exact same scale as London :O. No doubt it could be stored on this beast

As of now it wouldn't benefit gaming at all.
Devs already have way more space than they need with current blu-ray discs. to make games with more contents, devs need more time and money, not extra gb of space.

How many cutscenes could Kojima fit on a 400GB diskO_o?

Imagine the size of the games possible with this, it would be great.

Dear Sony,

Stop building for the future. Seriously, it's all they ever seem to no nowadays, and 'the future' being this hypothetical dreamland where Sony rule supreme in every walk of life, never happens. They've been banging on about how 'future proof' the PS3 is for three years, but they need to start acting now! Fuck the future, advertise for Christ's sake! Get the word out, tell the public how awesome the PS3 is now because if 'people' don't know the difference between a 360 and a PS3, 'people' are obviously going to go for the cheaper option.

Regards,
Laika.

I agree with Tykain, devs aren't lacking in space so this is really not that much needed.

AJ.

God, i thought GTA4 and MGS4 were huge.... now what?

As long as it isn't just loaded with cutscenes *Cough*MGS4*Cough* i think this has pretty good potential.

This would definately benefit devs now. A lot of development time is taken up on compressing files and textures - they haave to find the optimum level of filesize and quality. With limitless space developers can just concentrate on making everything work and use the highest quality settings, meaning it's easier for them to develop (provided their computers can handle the large sizes) and our games look better.

I'm not saying it will cut down development time, but I reckon it could depending on the developing and give better results. Won't be as effiecient but it doesn't matter as storage space is (almost) limitless.

Is this a work in progress or has it been made ?

i reckon later on in the ps3's life then this will be useful but for now no.
