Okay. SONY select you to test one of their upcoming games for however long. Then you'd report back to them on any bugs or glitches that would need to be fixed. Thats basically it Vapor. Hope it helps!

An alpha is early development, if you see vids from shows such as E3, Leipzig etc then you may notice that some game vids show 'Alpha Build' - it shows that a fair bit of the programming is done, but it's still far from the finished product.

Beta comes afterwards. A beta is a testing period of time, a few selected people try out the game/service and give feedback on problems/ideas for improvements, which the dev team can use to improve the service. Once it has reached a level of general customer satisfaction, it can then be released (or in the case of Mercs 2, just released anyway even if it's still buggy).

I'd just like to point out that betas aren't exclusive to the PS3, as Jake's post may have hinted.

It's basically a demo of a game before it's finished. Sort of:P.

A Demo is a "Slice" of the Full Game. A Beta is a "Slice" of the current game - if the game isn't finished yet, it is a Beta. The Beta has Time Trial, so you can't use it forever like you can with the Demo. If you are in a Beta, you should report glitches, bugs etc., so they can fix it before the full game is relesed.
And yes, it's only a "few" people that will get an Invite to the Beta...
- Good God, we have Gamesharing.. :P
