I'm just about to start reading Neuromancer by William Gibson - Having read trashy Buffy novels the past few weeks lol . It was written in 1984 and is apparently 'the first ever cyberpunk novel', a friend recommended I give it a read.
Last great book that I was impressed by was World War Z (Max Brooks) which I think I was having a conversation with Exion about elsewhere on this forum. If Neuromancer turns out to be any good I might read the others, as it's a part of a trilogy.

I had to read Lord of the Flies in GCSE English. Enjoyed it but think I would've liked it more if we weren't forced to read it as a group and analyse it after every bloody chapter!

Tolkamas (can't quote coz i'm posting on my damn phone :(): the zombie survival guide is good as well but tends to look at it in a humouress nature at times. World War Z is a much better read and probably one of the best books i've read this year.
I read talking in whispers for english back when i was in school (don't know if thats still a set text option?) but that was probs one of the best books i ever read at school (that and 'catcher in the rye').

I like Darren Shan too, however i'm only up too Slawter :( , and also my friend and I are obsessed with zombies he is moreso ( in fact he has whole sketchbooks full of zombie drawings ), but we have very intricate plans for any outbreak possibility lol( we were really bored in school) he also showed me that world war Z book is it any good I've been thinking about buying it.
I'm reading Anne Rice - Tale of the body thief... 4th book in the vampire chronicles
Tolkamas you might be interested in the series because you like Darren Shan, its really good, you may have already read them.

I read through Koji Suzuki's Ring Cycle series, the Harry Potter series, Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials series, and now I'm going through Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. I started at book 1 and now I'm on book 27, The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents. Some of TP's books are really funny, my favorite books are the ones centered around Rincewind and Sam Vimes/The City Watch. They say you don't have to read the books in order, but it makes the experience much better due to all the in-jokes and character development. Like Cut-Me-Own-Throat Dibbler who has equivalents of himself everywhere on the Discworld, like Disembowel-Meself-Honourably Dibhala, Swallow-Me-Own-Blowdart Dhlang-Dhlang, and Al-Jiblah. Well worth reading through if you have the time.

I read through Koji Suzuki's Ring Cycle series, ..... and now I'm going through Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels.
I've only read the 1st Ring book. A bit different then the Japanese movie, but good none the less.
About a year ago I started with the 1st Discworld book and I'm currently reading the 5th (The Wyrd Sisters) and planning on reading the rest too. In between the 4th and 5th Discworld I've read Clive Barker's Everville.
A book I want to start reading when I finish the current one is this:

I'm reading The Sleeping Doll by Jeffery Deaver. He wrote The Bone Collector series and a few others. He brings out a new book every year and it's really annoying waiting for the paperback version. If you like a bit of CSI type books I recommend all his books! Haven't got far in the new book yet...but really like it already.

I've just finished reading about 3PARA in Afghanistan. I also have a few other books ready to be read when I am ready. :D
A book called 'A million Bullets' which again is about Afghanistan but takes a look at the whole thing.
'Men who stare at goats' which is about failed US military experiments.
'Al Queda' which funnily enough is about them, I want to try and understand them and just what makes them what they are.
I am currently reading 'Lions, Dinosaurs and Donkeys' which is about waste and blundering within the Armed Forces. Very interesting book and it's certainly opened my eyes.
