Another suprise update comes to us a month after update 3.41, there was no details released before it and even after going live the details are still sketchy. The info reprted about it so far is it fixes certain security issues, so we can probably all asume this is to put a stop to the new jailbreaking system, What do you guys think?
I will update this post with any extra info we can find on the subject. ;)

I love an update in the morning :)
Yeh, with no previous announcements, you can only assume its for something unremarkable for the normal PS3 user.
EDIT. It has been confirmed that it stops the recent Jailbreaking fiasco.

It won't stop it just delay it. Sony have to juggle development between patching the "Security Vulnerability" as they eloquently put it and adding features for the console whereas the global team of hackers don't have to worry about any of that and can work on the Jailbreak.
I give it less than a month before a workaround is released.

Just did the firmware update before I came on the forum this morning and it has been confirmed that it has fixed the issue where people were able to jailbreak it.

I heard the software loaded from the jailbreak before the firmware, making a patch useless against the jailbreak?

Yeah but I think the 3.42 firmware update has fixed the issue so it can't be jailbreaked at all, until the jailbreakers find another way around it which wouldn't be for a while.

I haven't experienced a single problem with my PS3, only this morning after downloading this new update I decided to have a go on MW2. After a few rounds of S&D a big message poped up on the top right of my screen. Before I could even read it my PS3 shut down and a loud "VROOOOOOOOM" came from my PS3 and the power button light was flashing red. When I pressed the button it stopped flashing then pressed it again and started up okay.
Coincidence that this one time incident and problem I have ever experienced with PS3 happens after installing this update?
Oh an im not a jailbreaker lol.

Hopefully, and probably. But know doubt very soon all the forums will be covered with "update 3.42 bricked my PS3"

Not at all guys. Dont worry about it. It is to do with people getting content they havent payed for and similar. Very much like the iphone hack that gets free apps.

No but that's my point, if the jailbreak was loaded before the firmware, the jailbreak software couldn't be stopped because it would always bypass any fix sony put out
But I don't think many consoles will have already be chipped, so as soon as the ps3 ships with this update the number of modded consoles will not go up.

Thats true, but it won't stop people from not updating to 3.42 until they get the hack and then they'll be able to use it

Jailbreaking is being able to download content for free illegally (from an external website) so for example, they transfer the content from a memory stick, I think.

Jailbreaking is the process of stripping away the security implementations that are imposed by the devices Operating System allowing unsigned code to either run without being certified by the devices manufacturer, and/or allowing the code to have elevated access to the kernel meaning it can make the device do things that it wasn't originally intended for.

People worrying about jailbreakers able to see personal details such as credit card details etc, that isn't what jailbreaking is, it is so people can download stuff for free.
And what people have been doing is installing games to there PlayStation 3 so they don't need to put a disc in to play the game, because I saw a video where someone had the inFamous disc in the console but he was able to play Killzone 2 because he had jailbreaked.

thats cool, not worried now then thanx guys, ive never seen the point of shelling out
£200+ for a ps3 then running the risk of breaking it by using chips/hacks etc.

ok, i get it now... what i dont get, is the term 'jailbreak'... why call it that? why not not call it piracy, or stealing, because its essentially what it is. i cant see the link between "jailbreaking", and "getting free games through hacks".
it isnt important but... why?
its like 'happy slapping'. i never understood the reason behind that name either. 'recorded beating' makes more sense... but now i'm just branching off...

I believe it's to do with breaking through the restrictions placed upon you by the OS, similar to breaking out ofthe restrictions of jail

fair enough, but i still think piracy is the more descriptive name. jailbreak is a bit.... obscure... or i think so anyway. nevermind, at least i know what it means now.

Maybe the guys who did it just wanted to sound cool?
Piracy is too broad a term and I reckon they wanted to sound 'l33t' ;)

Jailbreak is its name, piracy is its game. What you're saying would be like calling cheese "processed fat" or yoghurt "week out of date milk"

The best description I've ever seen. made me laugh. Thanks PMG.
