View Full Version : Sony hide as PS3s go into meltdown

As many of you have probably noticed by now, the PSN is having a few, er, technical difficulties. Apparently (and unofficially) these have been caused by the system's internal clock thinking we are in a leap year and that today should be 29/2/10 instead of 1/3/10 (seriously, WTF Sony!)
This problem causes an 8001050F error and prevents people from signing into PSN, loading up games - even offline - and in many cases actually removes entire trophy lists from the XMB. At the moment it only appears to be affecting 'fat' PS3s, with Slim versions seemingly working perfectly.
Sony have been their normal reclusive selves and given us virtually nothing to ease our minds as to when it wil be fixed, but as it's a clock issue I'm guessing things will sort themselves out at around midnight tonight - that's unless the internal clocks then remain a day behind. Unfortunately, as no-one can sign into PSN, a quick fix patch would be hard to implement unless you did it via a USB stick, so this one has the potential to run for a little while longer.
If you want to stay up to date, your best bet is to keep a beady eye on Sony's PS Twitter feeds, which can be found here:
Sony PlayStation (http://twitter.com/SonyPlayStation)
Sony PS EU Blog (http://twitter.com/PlayStationEU)
EDIT:
Here's the official update on the situation from Sony:

Basically tells us nothing we didn't already know. It looks like Sony are just waiting to see if it fixes itself.

Found out about this last night from a friend. Sony really screwed up this time heh. My friend has a fat but it seems he isn't affected (it's a special edition one, guess it has more in common with the slim somehow). Seriously glad I've got a slim, I wouldn't be at all impressed if I couldn't use my system any more (especially a week before FF13 hits).

was working fine until i turned it off to watch 24 last night. I have a launch day 60GB fat, with a replaced HD to 320GB.
Think i will leave it switched off for 24 hrs, then it should be fine again. As with most calendar issues it should only get triggered on the day it happens otherwise the machine wont know any difference.

You would think so. However, what if the system thinks that tomorrow should be 1/3/10? It would remain a day behind. I don't know about the technical implications of stuff like that, but this may not fix itself at midnight. Correct me if I'm wrong.
My day 1 fat still shows all my trophies...
Iv not turned mine on all day, i think ill leave it untill there is a fix :(

I would Assume that monkeymajicks is right, and when you turn it on, on the 2nd it'll update the date properly. The problem as I understand it is that they were trying to set itself to a date that doesn't exist and then defaulting to the other one. Which then seems to have snowballed the issue.
Either way mine is staying off today and won't be turned on tomorrow until we have a definitive response from Sony.

Lol, 360 still how ever got a worse failure rate than the PS3 ;).
I wouldn't say that, seeing as how EVERY PS3 is down atm ;)
This is such a massive balls up by Sony, I'm just wondering how on Earth this was allowed to happen.
I have a theory however:
If you turn off the PS3's access to the internet and switch it on, it won't be able to sign in, right? This is no major issue, my internet is dodgy so I know from experience that the HDD won't reformat itself or anything like that. So, once the PS3 is on and not connecting to the internet, surely you could correct the date and sign back onto the PSN...?

It dosent matter if you turn your ps3 on or leave it off you will still be effected as the clock is powered by an internal battery so even when turned off the clock is ticking. Follow this guide if you want a fix for it. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=BQKBWX9Z

germ1984

Any trophies you synched before the issue arose will be on Sony's servers so after it's fixed and you synch again, they will reappear. Bit of a bugger as I would be able to try and get rid of my SF4 and FC2 lists that are stuck at about 10%. :(

Dammit! Would be nice if the trophies are still on my trophy card but not actually showing on the list when compare. Fingers crossed but cant see that happening either

Thread title is misleading, PSN isn't at the origin of the problem. Consoles that never been connected to internet have the same problem too. it's the consoles, not PSN.
Also, you still can download firmware updates. It doesn't requires being connected to PSN, as long as you can get on internet its fine. Games patch works too, as long as you can start it up (ie if it doesn't have trophies) it doesn't need to be connected to PSN.

A person on Kotaku wrote this comment.
It's seems rather plausible.
"The problem is probably related to the system clock itself. All processors do everything in slices of time. Those time-slices are distributed to the system by the clock.
The main clock that is running the processors thinks that today is Feb 29th. The other clocks in the system, that control other things like the system board or GPU are reporting that the date is March 1st. The servers at Sony are probably reporting a timestamp to the PS3 also, with March 1st, further confusing the logic processors of the PS3.
Since they cannot communicate or issue time-slices things are at a standstill. Once the date does actually change on all the clocks then maybe the problem will be fixed. Changing the "time" on your PS3 would probably not fix anything. That clock is more-than-likely not controlling anything sensitive to machine operations or it could be the clock that registers with the servers for DLC authentication. I'm not sure since I do not program for the PS3 and I am not too familiar with its architecture.
If the problem is not "self-resolved" by the date change at midnight then Sony will probably have to provide a firmware patch that can be downloaded on a PC USB stick and installed on the PS3. We would have to use this route since the clock that is controlling the system board is effected, which means the Wi-Fi and Ethernet ports will not be able to connect to PSN."

Whoever wrote that was very confused with internal clock / CPU clock rate, which is completely different things.
And the problem isn't that the date on internal clock / OS / PSN is all different, if it was any other different times but that actually exist it would be fine, the OS would sync with the internal clock time. The problem is that the internal clock says we are 29 feb, and for the OS 29 feb 2010 simply doesn't exist so it's just confused and displays a random time. And anything that uses the get_time function (Which uses the internal clock time) will just bring up an error.

Load of bollocks. My god of war trophies and Fifa 10 trophies have gone. Have just got back onto fifa now, and i unlocked a trophy i already had.
Came out of the game, and then looked at the amount of trophies I had. Its still the same amount that I had yesterday before the bug.
Sony looks like they have a lot of work on there hands.
Edit: Original percentage is now back for my Fifa once I came back out. So fix must be go into the game and come back out and everything should be fine from when they were lasted synched.

I thought the PS3s were going to start eating people through the blu ray drive :(
Some Y2K copy that was people need to get a grip, you couldn't play your PS3 for a day and you all go insane.
I think if people had been explicitly told by Sony that the problem was only going to affect one day then a lot more of them would've been reasonable and willing to wait it out.
The communication and 'PR' was simply awful. No, it’s not the biggest deal in the world that this happened, but for all that the man-on-the-street knew their consoles were broken and could have stayed that way for some time. Not everybody is as clued up as many of us were and nor would they have understood what was going on, so why wasn't a full and proper announcement made or a mass email sent?
Sony didn’t make ANY announcements on their 'fix' progress yesterday, they stalled us with one or two posts that gave nothing away. It’s very likely that they were working on it, but they didn’t fix anything – the system clocks sorted themselves out. They were still referring to it as a PSN outage last night which shows just how close they were to a proper diagnosis!
What I really love is the fact that Sony are claiming THEY fixed it, rather than what really happened which was essentially waiting it out. Coincidence then that it all started working exactly 24 hours after it all started cocking up in the first place. They must have been absolutely bricking it (pun not intended, but it fits).
I still think a firmware update is necessary - if my line of thought is correct then the internal clock will fail again; perhaps in 2014, maybe sooner i.e. the end of March. If they've just let it roll on then the internal clock will still be thinking that it's 1st March today which could have a knock-on effect. This is probably a 10-line code fix, tops.
Pathetic really and Sony got VERY lucky.
How likely is it that unlocked trophies that have disappeared are now locked completely so that a replay won't fix?

Why is evreyone going over the top about there trophies? You should already know that "TROPHIES ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO DELETE IN ANY WAY"! No matter what happens, your trophies cannot go!

On Sunday I had one, now I'm told I haven't.
If the Trophy Police are reading I've said I unlocked Baby Master [Bronze] in Heavy Rain and my card says I now don't have it - create a thread for me in the Cheater thread pls! :D

I can imagine the Sony HQ last night would have been hilarious. Everyone sitting with their fingers crossed at half 11 then breathing a massive sigh of relief. Lucky bastards

Will fix itself eventually, as happened to me before but just resync and put the date right.

I only noticed it this morning, but I've unlocked 3 more trophies in the game, and resynced but no joy - will replay the chapter tonight and see what happens...

Its a rite bastard as was going thru getting veteran trophies, now am gona have to do it all over again if i want to get platinum....
WTF SONY!!!
statment from Sony:
"It is possible that some trophies may be lost if you attempted to synchronise while the PlayStation Network was not available. Any trophies already synchronised to the main server before the outage should not be affected. If after you have attempted to re-synchronised trophies, any trophies are lost, it is not possible for them to be retrieved. "

Why buy a new ps3? the problem has been sorted sure you lose some trophies but only if you were too eager to play that you lost them.

Well i have being digging into this and i found that my theory was right on the money. This error was the work of the 3.15 firmware as my cousin's 80GB PS3 and one of their 80GB PS3 where untouch by this pandemic, both of these consoles has never being online and their firmware is very out dated. So with this i think its all down to a error in the latest firmware

Not sure about that blackoni; my fat PS3 has always been online and wasn't affected. As far as I know, slims and newer batches of fats were unaffected. But there were numerous reports of consoles being affected that had never been online. All of these things point to a hardware fault.
Your cousins just got lucky I guess!

Well also know that most of the older fat PS3 that got off with out a scratch was those that got their harddrives replaced with larger ones. By the way mine and my cousins where the same age models and if this was a hardware problem wouldn't it of happened last year too? I really want too get too the bottom of this so i am just throwing around theories would love too hear other thoughts on it
Now you mention it, mine was originally an 80GB, but I swapped the HDD out for a 500GB one. Can't see how that would make it immune to the problem though

Could be down too HDD size as all the Slims are 120GB and over and all the fat PS3 i heard where uneffected was the special 160GB uncharted bundle edition and the ones that had a HDD upgrade too have a larger HDD. Still don't think this was a hardware error, my money is on a flaw in the Firmware. BTW wasn't this the first new Firmware since the release of the Slim?

Doubt it. Mine was a 60Gb Japanese import (now with a 320Gb HDD) and that was effected.

Mmmmm interesting could be cuz its a japanese import? Not sure yours is the first i heard of to do that with a HDD upgrade, hopefully there are more people that can offer insight into this. Its really annoying not knowing what caused this

It had absolutely nothing to do with hard drive size, the firmware or the console's region of origin.
The culprit was the internal clock chip which incorrectly treats all even years as leap years, when it should only be those years which are a multiple of four. Sony should have acted far more quickly as the exact same component has already caused havoc in the Zune mp3 player and certain Blackberry mobiles.
PS3 slim consoles (and a small batch of the 80GB consoles) weren't affected purely because they no longer contain that specific chip.
