According to John Hight, Director of Product Development for Sony Santa Monica Studios, God of War 3 will not be the end for the hack n' slash franchise.
In a video interview with Gamervision.com, he said:
"This is not the end of God of War. This is definitely the end of the trilogy but we're going to continue to do God of War games. We're going to be very careful about what we do."
He also had some stuff to say on how much the GoW3 is a step up from the PS2 games:
"...we needed to pull out all the stops, not only technologically but we had to tell a great story at the same time. Going into God of War 3, we really wanted to take our time, rebuild our engine, take advantage of every ounce of the PS3 tech."
It sounds like any further games in the series will not feature Kratos as the main character, but that probably depends a lot on what happens to him at the end of the third game.
