Blacksmith Ed: take the damn soul

I've spent the better part of an hour trying to get him to change his dialogue so I can give him the red hot soul. He just keeps repeating "Ores are transmortified spirits...blah,blah,blah".

I tried wacking him a little, opening up dialogue with his brother, getting more boss souls, suiciding, reloading, depatching, and just yelling at the fucker.

Anyone have any suggestions? I'm on NG++ and just need the unique weapons trophy and the all magic learned one before starting my dreaded bladestone farm. Still need some mercury and cloud chunks but that's the least of my problems.

Perhaps whacking him isn't the best idea bud. How does he react when you speak to him? Does he go a little stroppy like Boldwin does occasionally?
Only thing I can think of is to "show him some coin" and just do some unneeded upgrades to see if you can't make him warm to you and accept that bloody soul.

Could you imagine what a changeable Ed would mean?
"Upgrade to a Sharp Dagger +5? Why certainly. That'll be 10 Pure Bladestones, mucho gracias!"

He doesn't vary his dialogue at all. He says two things when opening with him...need a blacksmith...then show me some coin...or whatever. Then when I click talk from the menu he says the above thing about Ore being trans-whatever spirits.

I actually hit him twice, the first time was after asking him at least 50 times. The second was a complete mistake, my finger slipped on the attack button....4am and being pissed off will do that to you.

Do you think my Character Tendency has anything to do with it? I got it on my first playthrough with no problem, then my second I did all the mephisopheles quests and made myself pretty evil. I tried a little on that play through but didn't bother since I still needed more boss souls to make the last few weapons.

I just tried thoughout my lunch hour, over 100 times. Still no go.

Being that I didn't use the Red Hot Demon Soul on my NG+, I had an extra when I talked to Ed. I talked to him before I even cleared FlameLurker for the third time, so technically I wasn't supposed to have it yet. Maybe the game glitched the dialogue when I did this?

Anyone else run into a problem with this or has done the same series of events and got it?

2. Started NG++ and tried to give the soul to Ed before killing Flamelurker, but he would not take it
3. Killed Flamelurker in NG++ and went back to Ed but now he will not ask you for the soul.

Is this right? World Tendency should have no effect on him, so if something has happened it may have to be with you talking to him before defeating Flamelurker.

I suppose you have tried it all but it does not hurt to ask: Are you currently carrying a weapon that can use his special upgrades? Have you tried entering that menu first and then talking to him?

Sorry I cannot be of more helps... there are some weird and random bugs now and then.

At least you fully understand my dilemma. You hit the nail on the head as far as series of events. I made the Large Sword of Searching on my first playthrough (btw, I think once you max your luck it's useless) and I always have it in my inventory.

I have all these weapons in my inventory ready to be specially upgraded:
1. Compound Short bow +7 for lava bow
2. Dagger +7 for Needle of Eternal Agony
3. Battle Axe +6 for Dozer Axe
4. Short Sword +8 for Morrion Blade
5. Winged Spear +7 for Scraping Spear
6. Club for Meat Cleaver

I didn't clear the Old Monk or Maiden Astraea yet, I was going to save them for last so I don't screw it up.

Both Red Hot Souls were grouped together in the inventory so I have no idea if I used the one from NG+ or NG++. I think I'm screwed. Unless someone wants to let me hold there items and I'll give it back, I'm destined for a fourth playthrough.

Thanks hihihellobye for answering. Your insight and tips for this game have been indispensable. I can see how much you and Samsengir love this game and I know why. I've beat Oblivion twice and have maxed out my character and played every single side quest. This game beats Oblivion hands down. (My former favorite game)

By the way, if it wasn't painfully obvious, none of those weapons show the special upgrade when I click on them.

On the other hand that bug sux. I really don't know what you could do... there is the chance that you "ate" the NG++ Flamelurker soul... which gives hope for NG+++

There are only 2 options left if you can't make it work: Get all the weapons from someone else, or get a friend to "hold onto" your stuff and start another game with a different character and have your friend give you back your things (you will likely have to glitch your new character to get to the right SL).

Make sure to trade with someone you trust!! Too many horror stories of things going missing.

Well, I guess I can live with playing it up to NG+++ and beating 1-1, 2-1, and 2-3 again.

Didn't want to have too but, maybe it'll give me a better chance at harvesting a pure bladestone. I'm still short 4 blade chunks along with 4 mercury and 3 clouds. I know I can get those pretty handily now, but I'm a bit impatient. How much does the difficulty go up on NG+++? It's already a bitch getting through NG++, my best weapon is a +5 moon spear and magic. I just started using the ancient king's armor from using the heavy armor of Biorr. Damn, and I thought this game was challenging enough.

I suppose you could consume all your Red Hot Demon souls then, on the next play through, get another Red Hot Demon soul and he should take it. I'm guessing all the Red Hot Demon souls are linked to specific games.

Eg.

Red Hot Demon Soul 1 - First playthrough
Red Hot Demon Soul 2 - NG+
Red Hot Demon Soul 3 - NG++ etc.

If you have more than one soul the game may get confused. I can't think of any other explanation. See if that works, its worth a try. Consume all your red hot demons souls first though.

And onto another point. Yeah, this game is amazing. Farming for the Pure Bladestone and still enjoying it on NG+ lol.

na mate i consumed it cos i didn't know about giving them to people till later lol! on my 2nd playthrough he just would not take it whatsoever! god know's why! it's like he didn't need it the moody nobhead! so i thought i'll show him lol and whooped his arse! but i've started a new character to help a friend and he took the soul today! i just walked out to the balcony outside his room then walked back in and had to go to the talk option twice then it gave me the option of giving him the soul and he took and then told me to bugger off and get him some more!

To be honest mate. You will barely notice the difference between NG+ and beyond compared to the difference between your first playthrough and NG+. And don't forget that now you know the levels you will also know which areas and enemies to avoid/evade if you don't need what they have. Multiple versions of rings and armours and most weapons and shields are pretty pointless to be fair.

Exactly what I have always done to get him to take it. Run through the preliminary chit chat until he's exhausted any mew material and then exit the conversation and re-initiate it. Then listen to him have an orgasm over a Red Hot demons Soul...

I FIGURED OUT THE GLITCH AND GOT ED TO TAKE THE SOUL!!!!11!!!11!11!

When I beat the armored spider I never touched the portal and took his soul. That must be the trigger for Ed to start talking about the Red Hot Demons' Soul!! You might want to put that in the wiki. Although, I don't see any more idiots like myself just running along after beating the spider and going right to flamelurker. The spider is extremely easy if you just stay to the far right along the wall when you first enter and just pelt him with arrows. His silk barely hurts you and the fireballs never reach.

Then again, maybe not. You can't go back to the nexus there if you are trying to get to pure white since the BP Sciver guy lies ahead. Also, I didn't take it because I didn't need it or the pure silkstone it drops.

Interesting. I've never not taken the Spider Soul before carrying on to the Flamelurker. This game is just full of curiosities like this. :)



You can't go back to the nexus there if you are trying to get to pure white since the BP Sciver guy lies ahead. Also, I didn't take it because I didn't need it or the pure silkstone it drops.

Why go for BP Scirvir after the Primeval Demon? I'm not saying you shouldn't but I am interested in why you would kill them in that order without unlocking the second area to begin with.
My reasoning as to why you shouldn't is thus:
A Primeval is no guarantee that you are in Pure Black and once dead will never return this playthrough. You may kill it and enter 2-2 and find that you aren't in Pure Black at all and Scirvir will not appear. Furthermore once the Primeval is dead it will shift your World Tendency back to neutral meaning more time spent getting it back to black to find Scirvir who, when dead, will only shift the World Tendency to neutral as well leading to less chance of Pure White.... After all the trouble I went through with learning the intricacies of World Tendency, I wouldn't risk it.

I think DocBooch is talking about being in Pure Black and working towards Pure White in which case he can't go back to the Nexus if, I'm assuming here, that he's killed the Primeval already and is heading for BP Scirvir.

Dude I just want to thank you for this, I have had this game for about a week and love it and was about to quit because of this same exact blacksmith ed issue..... Unbelievable that I forgot to use that crystal after spider armor boss I just wanted to access Ed in my NG+ :) Cheers bro and congrats for figuring that out!
