What stats did you focus on at first and which did you find most useful. at the moment I'm going for willpower, magic, vitality, endurance and strength.

I focus on willpower and magic mainly at the moment and the occasional vitality and endurance upgrade to help me survive and i rarely upgrade my strength the other ones i have just dropped really. What stats do you find 'the best' and which ones were your main focuses?

right now i am focusing on anything i need to use specific equipment - str/dex/mag/fai. after that i'll probably go for vit/end and the one that boosts my weapons dmg the most.

If your on a your first playthrough, focusing on magic is a pretty good idea, depending on your class. By the time you reach your NG+ youll be one of those really cool one hit kill magicians. Its always best to use ranged spells like SoulArrow and eventually MovingSoul Arrow. Then you can use the really poweerful spells like Rage of God and Firestorm.

Personally i focused on Vitality for about 10 levels and then i proceeded to work on my attack power, meaning dexterity, strength and my stamina. You really have to pay attention to what your upgrading cause some stats you upgrade may not even change in difference for a while, you might have to put in 2 or 3 upgrades to actually notice significant difference.

Hi there

You can actually build your character to be a master at everything, however it takes a lot of grinding to do so. It is much riskier to be a magician at first, since you need to defeat the bosses to get the good spells, but you can always summon allies to help so it compensates.

I would avoid being completely melee as well, since it limits you when dealing with levels overall, although it can be a very good idea when doing PvP

What class did you chose?

If you are playing a knight, I would recommend adding a mix on vitality, strength and endurance, alternating with magic and willpower. It is important to get strength and dexterity up to be able to weild the Meat Cleaver, so put that as your goal. On the Magic side, you want to have at least 3 slots on NG+, so make it your initial goal. As you play, you will discover your style, and probably get your take on any build.

btw will your meat cleaver attacks get faster if you have more str or something? i just reached the stats to use it, but it seems to be completely useless compered to a straight sword.

Yes the Meat Cleaver gets a bonus from your stats so it will become more and more powerful as you level up. Also remember that this weapon does more damage when held with one hand.
In the beginning, it is likely that other weapons will do more damage, however the Meat Cleaver has a knockdown effect that can really help when fighting.

No, the sword strokes won't get faster but on most enemies one overhead attack (R2) or a running R1 is enough to floor them. Once they're down they are at your mercy. Try using two-handed for a three stroke combo.
