360 Version Outsells the PS3 At More Than A Two-to-One Clip, But Figures May Be Misleading.

NPD’s software sales chart for June released a stunning figure:

Most importantly, the biggest selling game of the month was Prototype, which moved “roughly 600,000″ copies across the PS3 and Xbox 360. While 600,000 copies isn’t a bad sales figure it has to be noted that, for the top-selling game of the month, it is quite low. There could be several reasons behind the low sales: A) Summer sales numbers tend to be lower than winter sales, B) Prototype competed with a similar game, Infamous, which was a PS3 exclusive, and C) the economy is beginning to take a toll on the gaming industry, particularly on new games, which retail for $60.

The other interesting thing to note is that Prototype moved 419,000 copies on the Xbox 360, which leaves only about 191,000 copies sold on the PS3.

But, considering that PS3 owners had to choose between the exclusive Infamous and Prototype, the lower sales numbers can be attributed to competing interests. Infamous sold 192,700 copies, making the combined figures for the two similar games on the PS3 arrive at roughly 383,700. Shy of the 360’s sales of Prototype, but comparable.

So what does this mean?

Well, it means that figures can be misleading. While it appears that Prototype was clearly a fan-favorite and that the Xbox 360 is outselling the PS3, looking between the lines shows that Prototype had no competition on the 360 and thus didn’t suffer from the same low sales numbers as on the PS3.

Did Prototype’s sales on the 360 trump those of the Ps3? Yes. But is it an indicator of the 360’s popularity over the PS3? No.

In other NPD related news, there was a bright spot in June’s figures.

While game sales figures for June were exceedingly low, the Xbox 360 increased its sales numbers last month, the only console to do so.

I agree with you and think Xbox only outsold us because of PS3 also releasing Infamous at the same time.
Having two amazing games released at the same time caused people to more than likely buy one or the other.
Anyway's we all know the PS3 is the better system :P.

Yep, Terminal Gamer (http://terminalgamer.com/) did a good job.

Seriously, what's up with all these news threads being posted that are blatantly being taken from elsewhere, and without a source being provided? Is that not something that the mods should be looking out for?

I was asked to post news onto the site by staff. It is one of the few things that can actually be done with the absence of ientry.
So what is you issue? I havent stole the limelight as such, just informing members that do not visit Terminal Gamer.

I asked him to do this as i felt we needed some news being posted, however you should have posted a source of where you originally found the news to begin with, so please update all the threads with a source or i will have to close the.
