Thesixthaxis write:
Firmware updates are a strange thing, with the recent 2.80 update being entirely optional until this weekend’s VidZone update. Whilst I can’t personally confirm right now whether Sony have actually pushed the button marked “obligatory” on the PlayStation 3’s Firmware Update 2.80 C&VG are claiming that to play online you’ll now need to download and install the latest software update – it’s no longer optional – with the same “playback quality of some PlayStation 3 format software has been improved” change-log as we’ve had before. This isn’t the case for all games, and we suspect it’s just a select few as we said with VidZone.

At least now we know which software it has improved.

I Personally never skipped a update, so this new's doesn't really bother me to much.
I wonder what will be in the next update :P.
Hopefully something good.

I always wait a few days now before I do, just in case it crashes PS3s

You have the right idea, that's what I do too. I would hate to have something happen to me like what happened when trophies first come out, if anyone remembers?

This is new news?

I believe I've always been forced to update whenever there is one. If I go to play a game and there is an update, I'm told to get that first before I am able to play. :undecided:
