View Full Version : Today's myths.

Myth: We use only 10 percent of our brains.

Fact: Physicians and comedians alike, including Jerry Seinfeld, love to cite this one. It's sometimes erroneously credited to Albert Einstein. But MRI scans, PET scans and other imaging studies show no dormant areas of the brain, and even viewing individual neurons or cells reveals no inactive areas, the new paper points out. Metabolic studies of how brain cells process chemicals show no nonfunctioning areas. The myth probably originated with self-improvement hucksters in the early 1900s who wanted to convince people that they had yet not reached their full potential, Carroll figures. It also doesn't jibe with the fact that our other organs run at full tilt.

Myth: You should drink at least eight glasses of water a day.

Fact: "There is no medical evidence to suggest that you need that much water," said Dr. Rachel Vreeman, a pediatrics research fellow at the university and co-author of the journal article. Vreeman thinks this myth can be traced back to a 1945 recommendation from the Nutrition Council that a person consume the equivalent of 8 glasses (64 ounces) of fluid a day. Over the years, "fluid" turned to water. But fruits and vegetables, plus coffee and other liquids, count.

Myth: Fingernails and hair grow after death.

Fact: Most physicians queried on this one initially thought it was true. Upon further reflection, they realized it's impossible. Here's what happens: "As the body’s skin is drying out, soft tissue, especially skin, is retracting," Vreeman said. "The nails appear much more prominent as the skin dries out. The same is true, but less obvious, with hair. As the skin is shrinking back, the hair looks more prominent or sticks up a bit."

Myth: Shaved hair grows back faster, coarser and darker.

Fact: A 1928 clinical trial compared hair growth in shaved patches to growth in non-shaved patches. The hair which replaced the shaved hair was no darker or thicker, and did not grow in faster. More recent studies have confirmed that one. Here's the deal: When hair first comes in after being shaved, it grows with a blunt edge on top, Carroll and Vreeman explain. Over time, the blunt edge gets worn so it may seem thicker than it actually is. Hair that's just emerging can be darker too, because it hasn't been bleached by the sun.

Myth: Reading in dim light ruins your eyesight.

Fact: The researchers found no evidence that reading in dim light causes permanent eye damage. It can cause eye strain and temporarily decreased acuity, which subsides after rest.

Myth: Eating turkey makes you drowsy.

Fact: The thing is, a chemical in turkey called tryptophan is known to cause drowsiness. But turkey doesn't contain any more of it than does chicken or beef. This myth is fueled by the fact that turkey is often eaten with a colossal holiday meal, often accompanied by alcohol — both things that will make you sleepy.

Myth: Mobile phones are dangerous in hospitals.

Fact: There are no known cases of death related to this one. Cases of less-serious interference with hospital devices seem to be largely anecdotal, the researchers found. In one real study, mobile phones were found to interfere with 4 percent of devices, but only when the phone was within 3 feet of the device. A more recent study, this year, found no interference in 300 tests in 75 treatment rooms. To the contrary, when doctors use mobile phones, the improved communication means they make fewer mistakes.

Anyone know of any other's?

It would have been much easier if you'd just posted the link. ;)

I got widespread research from an array of websites and I did not think it would meet such hostile responses but create interest in a subject.
So no it would not been easier, thank you very much ;)

That very same list of myths has been doing the rounds for years. I doubt you got it all from an array of websites, but hey, maybe I'm wrong.

Anyway it wasn't supposed to be hostile, hence the wink.

Well then if you found them all on one site, well done you, if you would like to link it go ahead id appreciate it.
Sorry about the hostility but you gave me a criticism which wasn't wanted or needed.
I ask you please return to the topic.
Thank you.

This is ridiculous.

The list is interesting. There, now we're back on topic.

I have to agree with this, there was no need for them comments Fleech seeing as he never copied them from another website, if you ain't got anything constructive or on topic to say about the thread then i suggest you just don't post in them.

for the left and right handed thing is it medically proven that right handed people outlive left-handers or is it just the average lifespan of all left/right handed people from a sample.

And a myth i want to know if it is true or false is:

Weight training under the age of 15/16 stunts your growth because ive heard it many times but never seen any evidence backing it up.

Yh, i have heard that it causes certain parts of your body to grow out of proportion meaning that you could have skinny legs but big arms.

I was wondering the exact same thing, I saw it in that thread EstonianBeast made about working out, I believe Rotary mentioned it. Even though I'm technically over the age of 16 I'd still like to know if it is true for the educational gains alone. I'll have a word with RGL when he comes home from work and see if he can dig anything up. xD

Bazzer : It's true that it's a myth. You made it sound like it was a myth that was proven as true.

Craig : I'm 17 now so it's all good.

I don't trust any of these myths or scientific explanations to be honest. I would have to find a reliable source myself for it to be of any credible value. You could quote some of your sources though... Would be a nice touch.

Very interesting RGL. I think with the brain one, even though all parts are active, I highly doubt we are using it to potential. I think that the 10% figure may have meant potential, not active percent. ;)

I'd already tried to post this but it mysteriously disappeared.

The ones in the first post were in the British Medical Journal. Here's one source reporting it (http://www.livescience.com/health/071220-medical-myths.html), but there are loads if you search for '7 medical myths' in google.

Well done Fleech. That is word for word what RGL said in the original post. RGL : If you did get this from different sources then i'm sorry, but from my point of view it looks like you just copy pasted the one source without even bothering to let people know. Why?

It is a little weird how this site provides the identical myths etc as me.
I did in fact find my myths on several websites boasting about having these varying myths.
Maybe, the 2 or 3 sites I gathered my info from used this one as a source?
I am not sure.
I understand it looks a little odd and people are sceptical, but at the time of putting together this thread I never saw that page.
Maybe I should look around a bit better.

It's the fact that it was word for word, in the exact same order... If you did use several sources wouldn't you have noticed that they had the exact same things in the exact same order?

I really wasn't paying to much attention and just passed it off as a fluke.
Even so can we bring this thread back on topic please.
Thank you.

Does it really matter if he got it all from one site or from several different sites?

Anyway, another myth (that Hollywood is probably to blame for) is that petrol will explode if shot.

You can shoot a plastic jerry can of petrol and nothing will happen, although if you shoot a metal one it might create a spark which will ignite the petrol.
