PS3 Firmware (v2.70)

Today saw the release of PS3 Firmware (2.70) it was rumoured to have some great features such as voice messaging and accessing the internet browser while in game although the update is still very good and some of the rumours actually were correct or close to the actual update. Overall i know a lot of people will probably still be disappointed about no voice chat in game although i think Sony are heading in the right direction this time and have added some nice features that nobody could possibly knock.

Firmware (v2.70) Features

Friends List
- Sort friends via online status.
- File size for message attachments increased from 1MB to 3MB.

Gamer Card + Trophies
- Gamer Card feels slightly updated.
- Gamer Card and Trophy Images + Information now loads a lot faster than previously.
- Trophies for a game that another user in 'Compare Trophies' have not got are now represented as a - instead of 0%.

Web Browser
- You can now Copy and Paste text in the PS3 Browser.

Video delivery service on PlayStation Store
- Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future.
- Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

In-Game XMB
- Improved loading time.

In-Game Text Chat
- You can now Text Chat with groups of up to 15 people.

Downloads
- There is now an estimated time shown for downloads.

Internet Search
- There is now an Internet Search feature for games currently in the Disc Drive or downloaded to the HDD.

These are all the main features i can find which feel or have been improved / updated etc. Please note that most of the update features in this list was found by myself going through the PS3 and seeing what was new so some statements might be incorrect or inaccurate so please don't take this for my word although the majority of the features i have mentioned do exist once you update to version 2.70. Lastly what do you think about the new update (v2.70) and do you like any of the new features that have been implemented?

I was a bit disappointed seeing that most of the rumours weren't in the final update. However, I guess it is a step in the correct direction, which Sony are making. Just hope the next update, or maybe update 3.00 will give us the features that we all got our hopes on.

Well everything you have found yourself is incorrect, the update does exactly what it says on the blog. XMB is no faster at all and the gamercards dont load any quicker at least not at a rate thats worth mentioning or noticeable. Step in the right direction but overall another poor update and disappointing update but what else do we expect these days.

EDIT: sorry forgot to add your spot on with the trophies comparisons the - is a nice little touch but apart from that not a great update at all i mean who is gonna use text chat while in a game, u couldnt use it while playing online as u cant pause, voice chat just makes sense and the ps3 needs it, now being able to voice chat across games while in game with up to 2 ppl would be better than text chat with 15ppl in a game as u cant play the game properly while doing it and the ps3 is a games console im sure we all brought one for blu rays or hd gaming not multiple text messaging.

The gamercards definitely load much faster. before it waited to finish loading everything before displaying anything. now it first load trophies count and display that, then it load latest trophies pictures one by one and display them.
In game XMB seems to load faster to me too.

Yeah i thought so too Tykain and i think the actual Gamer Card has been slightly polished or modified it seems much larger than before unless if it is just where it loads up a lot faster and that is why i might have felt it appeared different, overall i think the update is good although it is a shame about no voice chat in game i think Sony have eliminated a lot of problems that might of caused voice chat at this stage to be very buggy like a slow xmb and trophy loading etc so hopefully we will see voice chat in the near future.

There is in-game chat. But it's not voice chat like all of us was expecting. It's just the new text-chat. Which is sort of like MSN, but obviously not as good. You can only send upto 30 characters per message. Which I think is extremely poor. The only good thing I can think of about this update is the loading speeds of the gamercards and comparing trophies. I've yet to test the speed for the in-game XMB.

And now you can select:

Couldn't you do this anyway? Something else that should go in here is that they are no longer displayed as online then not available then offline (in alphabetical order). They are now displayed as online then not available then offline... but it shows the people who went offline recently at the top, instead of them being in alphabetical order. If this makes any sense :P.

Also worth noting (sorry if this has been mentioned or has previously been doing so) that downloads now have an estimated time length to download on them....wasnt there previously so its nice to know that i dont have to sit and download ultimate team on fifa for 90 minutes...i can be doing other things more constructive....(like writing a post on ps3trophies ;))

In my eyes this is a very weak update. The PS3 is way behind the 360 when it comes to online features and IMO Sony need to start pulling there finger out fast if there to have any chance to even catch the 360 up in this area.

I really cant understand why massive brand like Sony seem to be so slow getting the PS3 up to speed, IMO it is still behind on what it should have had featured on the release date.

Please Sony get it right I love my PS3.

Some good new features, but who honestly expected all those rumoured changes from an update to 2.70 from 2.60?

The only thing I'd want to gripe about is trying to hunt for a name on a large friends list when the list is sorted by last online\offline time.
But hey, if you don't like it just switch back to the alphabetical sorting.

It's not way behind, it's missing a few features that some people care about and like telling people about it like it's the end of the World.

Maybe if Sony charged £50 a year for subscription we'd have had these features years ago. Me I would much sooner get a reasonable service that allows me to play games online when I want to for free than in game chat to random people on my friends list.

Anyway, I don't know if it's because Virginmedia have recently done some house keeping on the Derby network or the update, but my downloads in the store are flying now for the first time ever, I am actually able to watch a video while it's downloading and have no buffing for 10 minutes while it trys to download it.

Anyway, the rumour was half of the stuff isn't coming with the next update (ie 2.7) but the one after.

Not a great firmware update but one of the features I like is that we can now text chat while in a game which is a bit easier but would of been even better if they added a voice chat thing while your in a game like Xbox Live.

Since 2.70 now you can watch a whole video folder and skip to next file, and have a repeat folder feature.

Pretty convenient for Retrospectives...

I thought that this update was pretty pointless. None of the features are of any use to me. The in game chat....you may as well just send each other messages, at least they're not limited in size. Other than cross-game chat though, PS3 now has all the features it needs doesn't it? What else could you want?

Other than that...
. in-game internet browsing ability through the XMB (would prevent for printing faqs... or exit the game, seek on the net and restart the game)
, Video Playlists... (even though you could circle around it by downloading twice a video and put them on separate folders)
, Flash 9 or 10 or whatever it is that most sites use.. ie screwattack.com
, more temp memory for internet
. a bigger add/remove terms capacity (some people like me may want to avoid the pain to type nicknames and mispell them ... )


Oh and btw, while accessing ps3trophies.co.uk through the PS3's browser... You need too click on "quote" first before pasting a text... between tags ... or just learn them [ /QUOTE]

wowza stop biggin this update up....its terrible. i say dont bring an update out again until they,ve got to the standards of xbox live i have an xbox and a ps3. i turn my xbox on to chat to people n chat lobbys while i play on my ps3. but i mean come on text chat lobbys are just so last generation. lets get realistic its sony were talking about and there meant to be great in this franchise and they are but seriously they need to get real and not bring an update out till they atleast put PSN chat lobbys on. it really does make so much of a difference. who gives a f*k about loading times. if it takes ages to load, that you got loads of cr*p on your HDD. xbx live is a damn sight better online still but ps3 are definately in the right direction but they just need to sort it out otherwise they wont catch up.

I use HDMI to my 7.1 channel sony surround sound system, and before the 2.7 update, I would have to trick my ps3 (by going to audio settings, changing it to digital optical, then back to hdmi) to make it play audio from the xmb in all of my speakers, otherwise it would just play the front 3. Now with the 2.7 update, it automatically plays the music in stereo surround :-D

after the update, i can't see divx.... i have a nas200 connected in network and i share music and video.. when i upgrade to the last firmware i can't see divx and all of videos...

still be nice if they released a batch of avatars, themes, more gradients of colours or the ability to choose which colours your backgrounds changes to? I think customisation of the home menu thing is the way forward and possibly the ability to order your trophy collection? Having the ability to totally customize the order of songs, games, trophies, videos etc would be good. not just title, album, import date etc. any thoughts?

the update 3.00 is coming out in the autume

VG247 has learnt that PS3 Firmware 3.0, “a completely new system” for the console, is to release pre-Christmas with a raft of major feature updates.
The software upgrade has been described to us as “a huge overhaul”, and was compared to NXE “in some respects”.
The before-rumoured reputation system will be included. We were told that, “A reputation system in which users will be able to evaluate each other will be provided for… game applications.
“There will be a new API available to so the user can… allow users and also obtain users’ reputation.”
A “grief reporting system” will be included in the update, allowing gamers to take screens of offensive players and submit them to Sony. Apparently this is going to be similar to the LBP system, and is likely to include a text input.
Firmware 3.0 will allow patches will be downloaded in the background, meaning you’ll no longer have to sit staring at the screen while Random Shooter updates itself with a 500Mb fix.
There’s more. Simultaneous HDMI and digital optical outputting will be included in the release, a move likely to bring big smiles to the audio heads in the crowd.
We’ve been told a lot more on this, but you’ll just have to wait. Rest assured, 3.0 will be significant. Just remember where you heard it first.
Update: SCEA’s Patrick Seybold has told Joystiq: “Those rumors are completely untrue, nothing has been announced or confirmed for upcoming PlayStation firmware, and this is just wild speculation.”

The PS3 really needs an update, and I want it mainly around trophies :D
For example, a leaderboard with everyone in the PS3 world on it, and a friends list leaderboard. This has got to be added ;)

I'd really like to see PlayStation Network given a overhaul.

For it to compete with XBox Live's market hold, it needs to improve it's appearance and Sony need to brand it as a product rather than a service.

At the moment PSN as a service just comes across as letting people know your online, it needs to address itself as a community and start to achieve brand identity, which in all fairness is none existent when compared to Live.

I'd like to see it detach itself from XMB, and become moreso a separate application like PlayStation Store, Home and VidZone. I'm sure you know what I mean by that.

The service is good, it just needs tightening up and bundled into a package. I'm talking really cool new in-depth profiles, a new friends page, a latest news page rather than the ticker feed. It's all about the look now.

People need to think PSN is the place to be seen, which is why people headed for XBox despite it being in the inferior console. XBox 360's success is purely down to Live.
